Hong Kong will almost definitely see another wave of Covid-19 infections after mid or late autumn, Gabriel Leung, dean of the University of Hong Kong’s medical school, said on Thursday.

As effective vaccines are still unavailable, the next wave of infections could be even more serious, Leung suggested citizens brace themselves and not lower their guard.

After recording no local infection for seven consecutive days, a woman related to the first reported case in a local cluster tested positive for the virus on Thursday.

Leung said given the sources of recent clusters remain unknown, silent transmission in the local community could still be ongoing, it would be impossible to see zero cases in near future.

“We need to conduct massive testing and do our contact tracing well, including works of genomic sequencing, to identify [sources of infections],” Leung said.
