Synopsis:

Dr Miles Wen 温豪夫 (BEng(CE 2011; PhD 2015), founder of Fano Labs, explored the secrets in launching a successful startup with HKU students and recent graduates.

Beginning with a sharing on his personal experience of founding Fano Labs, Miles underlined the importance of perseverance and dedication towards his own goals. The audience had the opportunity to discuss whether one should consider the startup route and how to execute the idea.

Before concluding, Miles emphasised on two fundamental concepts to remember:

  1. Ideas are cheap, but execution is king – even with a great idea, it will not succeed without proper execution.
  2. Be relentlessly resourceful – whether it is finance, network, or skills, never stop trying your best to get the necessary resources.

This week’s Fireside Wednesday for New Grads covered an insightful and practical Job-Seeker Survival Guide from alumnus Danny Kwan (BBA(IS) 2007, BEng(SE) 2008).

Graduated in the 2008 global financial crisis, Danny understood the struggle the new Class of 2020 facing in landing a job amid an outbreak and answered diverse questions from the audience. His sharing covered practical tips ranging from enriching your CV to interview skillsets, where he stressed on the importance of having a specific and strength-oriented CV that stands out as head-hunters usually spend only 5 to 7 seconds on each CV.

Danny gave some practical things to note in the job application process and conducting online interviews:

  1. Read the company’s instructions
  2. Apply well before the deadline – recruitment begins from day one!
  3. Ensure you have a proper email address.
  4. Check the interview settings and get familiarised with the online platform.

Synopsis:

A lively second episode of the Fireside Wednesday for New Grads on Working Overseas featured Simon Sum (BSc 2002; MPhil 2004), Director of North America Scientific Affairs Herbalife Nutrition, and Kwok Yiu-Tung (BBA (Acc&Fin) 2002), Former CFO of Baroque Japan Limited.

The two alumni discussed their first-hand experience in working abroad in the US and Japan. The energetic dialogue ranged from how they started their first overseas job to challenges such as cultural differences they encountered, and even on how they had a competitive edge as an HKU graduate for HKU’s established brand and positive recognition. The session also facilitated questions about working holidays or accepting job offers from overseas start-ups, which both speakers agreed will be a valuable experience to treasure.

To wrap up, Tung and Simon gave valuable tips to HKU students and fresh graduates.

Tung emphasised on:
1. trying different part-time jobs during studies to gain various experience, and
2. staying positive and maintain a sense of humour.

Simon shared the acronym R A P:

A: Ask questions,
P: Plan and Stay Positive.

In this episode, Tracy Ho, a personal branding consultant and director of Frame & Fame Personal Branding, discussed how to build your personal brand efficiently and effectively with our HKU young graduates and students. Thank you all for joining this session and engaging in fruitful conversation.

Personal branding is the essence in self-differentiation from other candidates during the job search as almost 70% of employers nowadays lookout for an online presence of potential employees when hiring. Tracy underlined clear and comprehensive tips on building a personal brand on different platforms ranging from the key elements to keep in mind when building a personal brand to components that work together in defining your brand. She also presented practical advice on enhancing your LinkedIn profile by adding a profile picture with personality or an impactful yet clear-cut LinkedIn headliners.

To sum up, Tracy emphasised to “be known, be seen and be heard” when building a personal profile.

1. Be Known by setting a clear perception and image of your brand for yourself and the audience.
2. Be Seen by taking care of your brand materials and visuals, starting off with your own profile pictures across the platform, which incorporate your personality and individual story.
3. Be Heard by communicating your brand story clearly and precisely through integrating personality, emotion, logic and passion.
