The third wave of Covid-19 cases in Hong Kong brings new local infections, including a core cluster at a care home facility for the elderly with nine confirmed infections in two days.

Professor Gabriel Leung, dean of HKU’s medical school, suspected the infections at the care home were brought in by staff, and criticised the government for insufficient coronavirus testing for workers.

“The previous round of testing residential care home was underpowered to detect silent carriers among the care home workers,” Leung told SCMP.

He said half or two-thirds of workers should be tested at each care home, instead of three staff members per facility.

In the last two days, the city has 28 new local confirmed infections including 10 with unknown sources.
